Strathclyde Regatta 2014 Results

Early on Sunday morning, J14, and J16 squads as well as J18 scullers headed north to Strathclyde Park near Glasgow. It is the home of the Scottish National Rowing Centre. A multilane course that is usually 2000 metres. At this event the distance was reduced to 1500 m due to preparations for the Commonwealth Games triathlon swimming competition.

The advance party of Mathall Ashall, Tom Kane and RGT were the earliest to arrive, getting up there for around 8 am to pick up hire boats and be on the water for their races at 09:15. The Open Restricted 2 1x event was full of Club and University student scullers. Matthew and Tom did well to race with these older scullers but did not get through the heats. Tom came 7th (time 7:33) in his heat and Matthew came 6th (time 6:28) in a faster round that would have seen him come fourth in the previous heat.

The minibus and boat trailer with J16s, Jack Hatchman, DY and JPJ arrived by 09:40 to set up camp. The J16 group of eight boys raced J16 double sculls in the morning and J16 quad sculls in the afternoon.

LRGSBC had entered four J16 double scull crews. There were two heats with two LRGSBC crews in each. LRGSBC 'A' and 'C' raced the first heat. The 'A' crew of Adam Fyfe and Oliver Tidswell got through to the final behind Nithsdale RC. The 'C' crew of Joe Unwin and Cameron Stuart-Burgess came 5th in the heat, beating Clysdale RC but coming behind Glasgow Academy and Aberdeen SRA. LRGSBC 'B' and 'D' crews raced the second heat. LRGSBC 'D' crew of D.Kingcox and J.Mapp got through behind Clydesdale 'A' but LRGSBC 'B' of T.Nixon and D.Hammond came 4th behind George Watsons College and missed the cut.

The final was competitive with Clydesdale showing that they were the dominant force early on. Out of the LRGSBC crews, A.Fyfe and O.Tidswell looked the most threatening and powerful. At a lesser event, they may have won.

Preparing for the final J16 2x.

Jack Hatchman wants to go to Glasgow University and was encouraged to come up to Strathclyde to have a look at the Glasgow university crews and facilities. In his J18 single scull race, three scullers were to go through. Jack came 4th (time 6:29), just missing out by 0.4 seconds to Aberdeen Schools, George Watsons and Stirling RC.

The J14s arrived with parents around lunchtime. It was there first national regatta and there was plenty to take onboard. LRGSBC entered two J14 coxed quads and draw produced a straight final. Both crews prepared their boats and experienced the excitement of their first regatta. Their race lived up to their expectations with LRGSBC 'A' running side by side with Inverness for most of the course. It was only when Inverness put a push in that the Scottish crew drew out a half length lead which they extended to a length and maintained through the finish line. The LRGSBC 'B' crew also produced a great race which showed a huge leap in performance since Warrington Head.
